Background:

In the late 16th century, under the reign of James VI, Scotland was enveloped in a fear of witchcraft. The coastal town of North Berwick became infamous for its association with witches and their alleged malevolent acts. It was believed that witches gathered in the kirkyard of St Andrew’s church to dance, perform rituals, and commune with dark forces. These meetings were said to be led by the devil himself, who preached to the witches as they plotted against the King. The sinister gatherings in the kirkyard were central to the tales that fuelled the North Berwick witch trials, leading to widespread persecution and hysteria.
