"Hares Attacking the King's Ship" is a powerful still life photograph, capturing the dramatic and supernatural elements of witchcraft as believed by James VI of Scotland. Utilizing ethereal smoke effects, this image portrays the mystical hares that, according to legend, were summoned by witches to create a ferocious storm, ultimately sinking one of the King's ships laden with his precious possessions.
Background:
Under the reign of James VI, Scotland was gripped by an intense fear of witches and their supposed dark powers. The coastal town of North Berwick became infamous for its witchcraft activities, where a witch was said to have held secret meetings with the devil at sea, plotting against the King. These witches gathered in St Andrew’s churchyard to dance and listen to the devil preach, conspiring to prevent the King’s new bride from sailing to Scotland from Denmark. Their malevolent magic was believed to have called up violent storms, leading to the sinking of a ship carrying the King's valuable possessions. James VI was convinced that these spirits took the form of hares, wreaking havoc on his fleet.
