Background:

During the reign of James VI, suspicions of witches and witchcraft gripped Scotland. In the coastal town of North Berwick, legend tells of a witch who conspired with the devil at sea, plotting against the King in the shadow of the Bass Rock. A congregation of witches danced and listened to the devil preach in St Andrew’s churchyard, devising a plan to hinder the King’s bride from sailing to Scotland from Denmark. They called up storms so fierce that they sank one of the King’s ships as he travelled by sea, with James VI believing that these witches had summoned spirits in the form of hares to achieve.

"Hare Raising Spirits" is a seminal piece in a developing series exploring the harrowing tales of the witch trials under James VI and I. I aim to explore the fear and persecution that swept across Scotland and spread to other nations under the influence of a paranoid King.
